India:
Basketball in India has been growing in popularity over the years, and it has a relatively long history in the country. The first recorded basketball game in India was played in 1930 in YMCA Chennai. However, the sport struggled to gain popularity due to a lack of infrastructure, funding, and promotion.
In 1950, the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) was formed to promote and develop the sport in the country. The BFI is the governing body for basketball in India and is responsible for organizing national and international events, training programs, and tournaments.
India has participated in the Asian Games since 1965, and the men's team has won several medals in the tournament, including a gold medal in 1965, silver in 1971 and 2014, and bronze in 1969, 1975, 1979, 1982, and 1990. The women's team won their first medal, a bronze, in 2019.
In recent years, the popularity of basketball has increased significantly in India, especially among the youth. The National Basketball Association (NBA) has been working to promote the sport in India through various initiatives, such as the Jr. NBA program and Basketball Without Borders India, which provides top young talent with a chance to participate in an NBA-style camp.
Today, India has several professional basketball leagues, including the 3BL (3x3 Pro Basketball League) and UBA (United Basketball Alliance), and many talented Indian players are making their mark in the international arena. Despite the challenges, basketball in India is on an upward trajectory, and the future looks bright for the sport in the country.
